Ohhh how I love grapefruit! For a good six months of the year, eating one is my first order of business when I get to the office. Personally, I peel them like an orange, but I think when most people think about how to serve grapefruit, they tend to go the traditional route – cut in half, sectioned out, and smothered in sugar. My husband’s stance when it comes to the bitter citrus is sugar or nothing, so when I heard of broiling grapefruit as a way to up the sweetness without so much sweetener, I had to give it a try.
This recipe couldn’t get much simpler – broiling releases the natural sweetness of the fruit, and we back it up a little with a little maple syrup. Sometimes when we’d like a little extra sweetness or texture we’ll top it with sliced fruit and granola, but it’s delicious on its own.
I use maple syrup because I like the flavor better than honey, but you could do honey, or even a little brown sugar if you’d prefer.
- 1 grapefruit halved
- 4 tsp maple syrup honey, or brown sugar
- sliced strawberries peaches, or bananas (optional)
- dash ground cinnamon to taste (optional)
-
Pre-heat broiler. Halve and section grapefruit. Drizzle with sweetener of choice. Top with fruit and cinnamon if desired. Place on a baking sheet lined with foil. Broil, watching closely, until the top is browned, approximately 4-5 minutes. Serve with additional fruit, cinnamon, granola, and/or yogurt.
